A Beginner's Guide to Vape Mods

For adults 21+. This article is for adults 21 and over. Nicotine is an addictive chemical.

A vape mod is a refillable device with a bigger battery and more control than a basic pod system. That control is the appeal: you can adjust power, airflow and coil type to fit how you like to vape. It also means there is more to learn. This guide covers the basics so you know what you are buying and how to use it safely.

What is a vape mod?

"Mod" is short for modification, a name that goes back to early homemade devices. Today it means an adjustable, refillable device. The most common shape is the box mod, a rectangular device with a screen and buttons. You pair it with a tank, and you fill the tank with e-liquid. If you are still deciding whether a refillable device is for you at all, start with disposable vs refillable vape.

The parts you will deal with

  • Battery. Some mods have a built-in rechargeable battery. Many use one or two removable cells, most often the 18650 or 21700 size.
  • Chip and screen. The chip controls power output and safety protections. The screen shows wattage, battery level and coil resistance.
  • Tank. Holds the e-liquid and houses the coil.
  • Coil. The heating element inside the tank. Coils wear out and need replacing.
  • E-liquid. The liquid you vape. It is made of propylene glycol (PG), vegetable glycerin (VG), flavoring and, optionally, nicotine.

Regulated vs mechanical mods

Regulated mods have circuitry that guards against problems like short circuits and over-discharging the battery. Mechanical mods have no protection at all and require a solid understanding of battery limits and Ohm's law. As a beginner, stick with a regulated mod.

Coils, wattage and how to start

Coils are rated in ohms, which is their electrical resistance. In general, a lower resistance coil pulls more power, makes more vapor, uses more e-liquid and drains the battery faster. A higher resistance coil is gentler and lasts longer per charge.

Every coil lists a recommended wattage range on the coil or its packaging. Start at the low end of that range, and only move up if you want more warmth or vapor. Going above the range usually gives a burnt taste and shortens coil life.

Mouth-to-lung vs direct-to-lung

  • Mouth-to-lung (MTL) feels closer to a cigarette draw. It uses tighter airflow and higher resistance coils, and it usually pairs with higher nicotine strengths and higher PG e-liquid.
  • Direct-to-lung (DTL) uses open airflow and low resistance "sub-ohm" coils. It produces bigger clouds, and because so much more liquid is delivered, it usually pairs with lower nicotine strengths and higher VG e-liquid.

Picking the wrong pairing, such as high nicotine with a sub-ohm coil, is one of the most common beginner mistakes.

Battery safety basics

  • Use only the battery type and size your mod is designed for, from a reputable seller.
  • Check the wrap. If the plastic wrap is torn, stop using that battery.
  • Carry spare batteries in a case, never loose in a pocket with keys or coins.
  • Use the correct charger, charge on a hard surface, and do not leave batteries charging unattended.
  • If a device gets very hot, swells, hisses or smells odd, stop using it.
  • Dispose of old lithium batteries at a battery recycling or hazardous waste drop-off, not in household trash.

Common beginner mistakes

  • Turning the wattage too high for the coil.
  • Not priming a new coil. Drip a little e-liquid onto the cotton and let it soak for several minutes before the first use.
  • Overfilling the tank, which causes leaks.
  • Mismatching the nicotine strength to the coil style.
  • Buying a mod, tank and coils that are not compatible with each other.

What you need to get started

A regulated mod, a compatible tank, spare coils, e-liquid in a strength that fits your style, batteries if the mod uses removable cells, and a charger. Staff can put together a compatible setup so nothing is missing when you leave.
